Improving Team Stability to Meet Growth Targets at a Tech Unicorn

Situation

A venture-backed tech unicorn was struggling to meet its targets after an extended period of rapid growth. This resulted in rapid turnover among executives, further exacerbating performance issues. As the CEO began to face scrutiny from investors, TMG was engaged to help stabilize the leadership team, increase effectiveness, and improve the organization’s work culture.

Approach

It was clear from the outset that behavioral change would be a critical component of this engagement. The C-Suite had been incredibly effective in driving revenue and fundraising but at the expense of company culture, limiting their potential. After a thorough debrief on the reports, TMG proceeded with the program’s next step–customized coaching programs for each participant, including monthly 1:1 meetings. In addition to 1:1 sessions, the TMG team conducted group coaching sessions for the leadership team focused on improving group dynamics and trust while addressing group-level themes and development needs uncovered by the initial 360 assessments.

Building on the insights from the assessments and coaching sessions, TMG provided strategic guidance to both the Board and the CEO on the evolution of the leadership team. This included recommendations on the team’s structure, identifying critical skill and experience gaps, and prioritizing new roles and recruitment.

As new senior executives joined the team, TMG facilitated onboarding sessions and initiated ongoing monthly coaching, drawing from our extensive library of coaching content to cater to the specific needs of each executive.

Outcome

The CEO rebuilt credibility with the Board, enabling her to effectively influence decision-making around strategy and changes to the Company. The CEO also built trust and streamlined communication with her direct reports, allowing the entire team to unlock greater potential. Company culture improved significantly, and turnover decreased by more than 50%. The coaching didn’t just affect relationship dynamics and talent retention; TMG’s work also had tangible business results–the Company went from missing targets and struggling to deliver against growth strategy to outperforming targets by 2X.
